Trancoso, localized in the state of Bahia, Brazil, is a small village that became a favorite for tourists looking to get away from the big city or the cold weather.

The Quadrado is the historical center and the beating heart of Trancoso. A main square, surrounded by colorful houses and a 16th century church overlooking the sea.

The weather is warm year-round, with the occasional rain in May/June. I have been there during the peak season and off-season. There are pros and cons of both: the off-season offers less crowds. Peak season (December to March) offers the festivities of the end of the year and of Carnaval. One thing is sure: there is no wrong time to visit Trancoso.

You can find 5-star resorts and affordable bed and breakfasts alike in Trancoso. It all depends on personal preferences. If you enjoy buzzing streets, with bohemian bars and shops all around selling handcrafted items, from furniture to jewelry and clothing (all made locally) you would prefer to stay downtown or near the Quadrado. If you prefer the convenience of an all-inclusive resort, with access to a number of activities and private beaches, surrounded by native Atlantic rainforest, you will find plenty of those; they usually are more secluded, but most of them offer transportation and guided tours of the town.

One of the most amazing things in Trancoso is its people. The welcoming community of native residents is as important to what makes Trancoso special as the beaches. You will see the youth playing football in the grassy square while older fisherman sits together and talk about their days. Artistic expressions are everywhere, with the artisans working their craft. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars, serving Brazilian and foreign dishes. It is a safe community, where you will find people around anytime. You can relax on the beaches while enjoying drinks, swim in the crystalline sea and discover the nightlife of the village.
